Home Renovation Tip - Wind Turbine Vents

The installation of the recessed (also known in certain parts as 'pot') lights in our family room, kitchen, bedrooms and en suite occurred during the mid-summer. We had just installed a black fiberglass shingles on top of the roof.

One can imagine the sweat that the lads working for our primary contractor endured on the sunny days as the air in the attic was not sufficiently moving, causing an extreme heat build-up. In fact, if you were to have been in the closet of our daughter's bedroom with the access to the attic, it was unbearably hot just in that closet!

Over time, having a poorly ventilated attic with extreme heat build up can cause severe damage to the roof's shingles, required premature replacement. Such damage is likely not covered by a manufacturer's warranty.

The solution was two fold. First, we had the roofer return and take one of the flat vents from the back of the house and install it over the garage on the east side. This created an escape for the air in the attic where none previously existed.

Second, we had the roofer also install a turbine vent in the air vent upon which the previous flat vent was located in the back of the house. This device, less than $100 at the local big box retail store, has the moving part that will turn based on either the wind outside or by the hot air in the attic; remember, hot air rises.

The difference was amazing. No longer was the temperature in that bedroom closet with the attic access any warmer than other parts of the house. The lad's reported an immediate decrease in the attic air, which made their tasks much easier. And, with the hot air being able to escape the house much more easily, the air conditioner would not need to be on as much, thus saving significant energy costs for the summer cooling.

Wind turbine vents are not just for commercial, industrial or cottage buildings. Also, with the location on the roof at the back of the house, it cannot be seen from the front. Therefore, it does not impact the view from street. And, we found one in black to match the shingles!
